Pia Johnson is a photographer based in Melbourne Australia.
Her visual art practice seeks to investigate issues about cultural difference, diaspora and identity, in particular her mixed background of Chinese and Anglo-Australian descent. Her works have been collected in private, corporate and public collections. Her solo exhibition Who’s the Chinese lady that picks you up from school? (2009) - a close-up photographic portrait series of mixed Chinese Australians - was first exhibited at fortyfivedownstairs. It was purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria, and two of the pieces were exhibited as part of the 2010 Love, Loss and Intimacy exhibition at NGV International. Other recent photography exhibitions have included threads at Guildford Lane Gallery in Melbourne (2009), and with collaborator photographer Sarah Anderson Making it Sacred held at Carbon BLACK gallery in Prahran (2010), Mixed Media at Ausin Tang Gallery Prahran, (Jan-Feb 2012), Making Yourself At Home at Chinalink Gallery in Sydney (Feb 2012), and recent selection as a finalist in the Onward Compe '12 photography exhibition by US photographer Todd Hido at Project Basho Gallery in Philadelphia USA (9 Feb - 25 Mar 2012).
Pia specialises in photographing Melbourne’s performing artists. Her clients include the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), Ensemble Liaison, Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Piano Trio, Melbourne Theatre Company, Peepshow Inc, Ride On Theatre, Songmakers Australia, Victorian Opera and many more.
Her photographs have been published in The Australian, The Australian Financial Review, The Age, The Age Life and Style, The Herald Sun as well as independent and cultural papers including Zing Shanghai’s Xintiandi magazine.
